No matter how deep you dig, you’ll always discover more. Great literature, after all, has many layers of meaning. It causes us to miss the most important things, like a word that evokes powerful associations, or a subtext that shimmers between the lines. But when it comes to reading literature, skimming is simply counterproductive. Skim-reading certainly has its merits in certain situations where efficiency is the goal. This leads to skim-reading, when we’re always on the hunt for quick info, a surprise or a laugh. We’re able to read faster and tend to read more superficially. Well, as we grow older, we also grow impatient. They’re incredibly thorough, and make much better close readers than we adults. Have you ever watched a child read? Many mouth every word they read to themselves silently.

He took a doctorate in philosophy at Liverpool University in 1925. His service with the Quaker-funded Friends' Ambulance Unit in World War One, for which he received the Croix de Guerre, helped him formulate his pacifism and also provided material for Last Men in London ( 1932). There is scattered evidence that the international flavour of Port Said influenced his complex ideas about "true community". After studying at Balliol College, Oxford, he worked for a short period without enthusiasm in the family shipping office in Port Said, an experience he used in his highly autobiographical last novel, A Man Divided ( 1950). The name Olaf does not indicate foreign antecedents: his parents had been reading Carlyle's The Early Kings of Norway (coll 1875) when he was born. In Waking World ( 1934) he admitted that he lived "chiefly on dividends and other ill-gotten gains". I received an ARC of this series in exchange for an honest review!ĭNF halfway through book 2! Dark romance, be warned! Overall, I liked the series, love’s partnership in an age-gap romance with intrigue, beauty, cunning and a hint of darkness. A decided slow burn, I would have been content with less detail. After a stunning introduction (book one), book two was the breadth of story development with more action in books three and four. Mostly I loved the writing and visuals the series conveyed. Rafe and Isa shared a passionate love affair, so attracted to each other it was tangible. Rafe is charming but ruthless, predatory, and Isa is sweet, unobtrusive, and develops into woman of reckoning, wielding her position by Rafe’s side.Įven with some darker themes, I could feel the theme of romance and fated love flowing alongside the events. The strategic compulsive plays he carries out to make his princess his queen are revealed among heady spice, a cartel backdrop, and self-actualization. Rafe, immediately arrested upon seeing Isa, claims her as his own. Rafe and Isa story’s is one for all time. In contrast to his status-conscious character Gabriel Conroy, James Joyce rejected good taste - one of the characteristics that mark his art as Modern.Ī precedent existed for Joyce's warts-and-all approach, in the nineteenth-century French school of writing known as Naturalism, but no writer had ever been quite as explicit, or as relentlessly downbeat, as Joyce in Dubliners. Disrespectful dialogue about the king of England, and even the use of the mild British oath "bloody," were thought by many to go beyond the bounds of good taste - and they did. (In the past, fiction writers had almost invariably changed the names of their short-story and novel settings, or discretely left them out altogether.) In fact, including these details delayed publication of the book by years, as potential publishers and printers feared lawsuits by those businesses mentioned by name. The use throughout of the names of Dublin streets and parks - and especially shops, pubs, and railway companies - was seen as scandalous, too. The collection all but overflows with unattractive human behavior: simony, truancy, pederasty, drunkenness (all of them in the first three stories alone!), child and spousal abuse, gambling, prostitution, petty thievery, blackmail, and suicide. Even before its London publication in 1914, James Joyce's Dubliners caused considerable controversy due to the material in the stories that was obvious and accessible, available to even the most casual readers and reviewers. Lessig, a constitutional lawyer and now after teaching at Chicago and Harvard - a law professor at Stanford, argues that the internet demands a new understanding of regulation. Lessig's sophisticated insights into how Cyberspace is and can be regulated, provide us with new perspectives on law and governance in this fascinating and fast evolving area. Be this as it may, even if one can assume that those interested in cyberlaw, the governance of the internet and the intricate constitutional issues involved, will already have read the book and, possibly, even Lessig's new one, also published in October(1), Berlin Verlag has placed an already "classic" title on the German book market. Considering that "Code and other Laws of Cyberspace" has been the talk of the town in cyberspace since it first appeared, it is somewhat surprising that it comes out only now in German. Lawrence Lessig's book which has dominated the US-American Cyber Law Discourse since its publication in 1999, has now been translated into German and published by Berlin Verlag. Outside of PiL John has released several solo collaborations most notably the groundbreaking rock/rap crossover ‘World Destruction’ with Africa Bambaataa in 1984, and the pioneering ‘Open Up’ with dance duo Leftfield in 1993. With a shifting line-up and unique sound John Lydon guided the band from their debut album ‘First Issue’ in 1978 through to 1992’s ‘That What Is Not’, before a 17 year hiatus. Widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential bands of all time PiL’s music and vision earned them 5 UK Top 20 Singles and 5 UK Top 20 Albums. Lydon’s unique vocal delivery and perceptive lyrics remained, however, PiL were nothing like the Sex Pistols. McLaren tried to legally prevent him using the name “Rotten” – but regardless – this was a new beginning. When the Sex Pistols split in January 1978 John quickly moved onto Public Image Limited (PiL). If John hadn’t joined the band that would later become the Sex Pistols back in 1975 they would have been a very, very different band. It is a well-worn story that John was spotted wearing a “I Hate Pink Floyd” t-shirt and invited to audition as singer for a fledgling band that had been pestering Malcolm McLaren to manage them.
